CONTEST Crux by Moria Rogers

Crux - Southern Arcana #1 by Moria Rogers
Jackson Holt makes a decent living as a private investigator in New Orleans, home of one of the largest underground supernatural populations in the United States. He and his partners have never met a case they couldn't crack...until a local bar owner asks him to do a little digging on her newest hire.

New Orleans is the fourth destination in as many months for Mackenzie Brooks, a woman on the run from a deranged stalker. After all, any man who shows up on her doorstep claiming to be her destined lover has more than a few screws loose. But crazy doesn't explain why he always finds her no matter how far she runs.

When her well-meaning boss puts a PI on her case, Mackenzie comes face to face with the incredible truth: magic is real, and whatever spell has kept her hidden and separate from the paranormal world is rapidly deteriorating.

With time running out, she has no choice but to trust Jackson as he struggles to uncover the truth of her past-and her destiny.

This will be my very first contest and I will make it simple! The prize is a fantastic new copy of Crux! All you need to do to make this book yours is comment on this post! It is that easy. Paranormal Haiku

I awoke here
The dark so deep, so complete
I have become more

Glistening white fangs
Echoes of pain, drops of blood
The whisper of death

Eternity of pain
Curled in a corner... pain
Of pain I will be

The night stalking me
Grasping, longing forever
Hopeless surrender

Silence awakened
A predator with no soul
Knowing its prey comes

These are my virgin attempts are writing a haiku. Though I am certain I did some in my elective classes for poetry in high school. That was just so very long ago. Created for contest at A Blurred History.

Trapped in a restaurant meme game!

memegame1. In MIND GAMES, hypochondriac heroine Justine Jones can’t figure out why tortured mastermind Sterling Packard never sets foot outside the Mongolian Delites restaurant. What if you were somehow trapped in a restaurant, what sort of restaurant would you prefer?
If I were trapped in a restaurant I would prefer Mexican. The rice, tacos and burritos... yummmmmm!

2. What if you won the fancy $100 dinner to a restaurant of your choice, and you could dine with any character from any book, movie, or history. Who would you choose?
Wow, hard question! I think I would choose Acheron from The Dark-Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon.

3. Choose three characters to dine with for a lively dinner party (you can define lively however you want).
Another hard one! My lively dinner party would need to include Edward and Bella from Twilight (oh, stop your groaning) and to liven it up a bit lets add Lucan from The Kiss of Midnight by Lara Adrian and he can bring Gabrielle. Oh no, I choose four!!! And I was thinking vampire, but what about my lovely Scottish heros! This may take a while, LOL!

Anyone can play!

Always Reading... Always

Yes, this is me reading Mark of the Demon by Diana Rowland.
This photo collage was created for a contest at Diana Rowland's website.
It was particularity fun because my daughter took all but a couple of the images.
She enjoyed being a junior photographer for the day and she did a great job.
She is pictured on the left, after sneaking a peek in Mark of the Demon.

Teaser Tuesday (8) - Shades of Midnight

Shades of Midnight by Lara Adrian:

Zach's eyes blazed with anger, but he offered her a sympathetic look. "Is that really what you think of me? You've known me for years, Alex."
"Have I?" She shook her head. "I'm not so sure. I'm not sure of anything anymore."
"Then let me take care of you," he said, his voice gentle, but she was hardly convinced.

Review: Highland Surrender

Highland Surrender
Dawn Halliday

From the author of "wickedly erotic romance" (Monica McCarty) comes the tale of a Highland lass and an earl with dark desires.

Determined to put his roguish past behind him, the Earl of Camdonn arranges to marry the proper Lady Elizabeth. But when an accident lands the Earl in the expert hands of a beautiful Highland medicine woman, all well-laid plans are thrown to the wind- and, just as in the old days, his passions run high...

Ceana MacNab has terrible luck with men. Resigning herself to the healing arts, she has steeled her heart against love. Then fate sends Cam her way. Even though he's a well-bred Earl-and Ceana a low-born Highlander-their all-consuming passion may lead the way to lasting bliss.

 Source: http://www.fantasticfiction.co.uk/h/dawn-halliday/highland-surrender.htm

Dawn Halliday writes with a flare and passion in Highland Surrender that captured me immediately. I love the rugged, untamed land of the highlands as well as the characters. I really got a great feeling of the surroundings and attitude of the land early in the book. From cottages to castles and forests to fields the landscape was very well written. I enjoyed seeing the highlands through Lady Elizabeth's English eyes as well as from the eyes of the Scottish residents. The loyalty to family and land was easily evident and natural.

For me this book was a sweet torture. There are many twists and turns in the story. Just when I thought I had a good grasp on what was happening, or should happen next, I was tossed again. The anticipation of the next page was exhausting. I found my fingers twitching to sneak a peak ahead. The urge to resolve the characters struggles was palatable.

As deep as the story was the characters were just as complicated. I was intrigued by the silent strength hinted at in Lady Elizabeth from the start. In fact, all of the female characters are incredibly self sufficient, strong and intelligent. Not a simpering maid in sight. If I were to choose one word to describe the overall feelings of the characters it would be... angst. And a ton of it.

From love to hate this book explores a depth of feeling and soul that captured my heart. I smiled, I cried, and I sat on the edge of my seat. The characters experience the true gauntlet of passion to pain. This historical romance book has something for everyone and is a delightfully thrilling read.

Intense Whispers:
"Well, I assume you are, in any case. You might be one of those noblemen who sits about all day drinking brandy and gazing at your beautiful visage in a gilded mirror."
~ page 56

She was doomed. Nevertheless, the wild part of her took over, whooping in glee and trampling the sensible part of her into the dust.

Sometimes Less is Less

I need to get this off me chest. This morning while showering I was having a conversation with myself, as I am wont to do. I want to share those thoughts with you.

Some background: Not to long ago I was have a conversion with a friend about chest size. Yes, the friend was a woman. And weird as it may seem, woman talk about those types of things. In any case, she mentioned that she has a rather large bust and we joked. It became less funny when she mentioned the cost of her bras. When I brought the discussion up with my husband, he got all gooey- eyed. Until I relayed her bra price tag. Needless to say he has a new respect for my middle-income boobs! Yup, no bank or back breakers here.

This had me thinking this morning... perhaps women with smaller boobs should be proud to have more economical and environmentally friendly boobs. After all their budget for bras must be minimal and it also means less material, labor and waste from bra manufacturing. They should stand tall and thrust out their wee bumps! Be proud of their eco-boobs!

And for those of you gals with your fair share... I say buy on a budget. Let us call it, Bras On O' Budget (BOOB) for short. My BOOB secret is to buy on eBay. I wear one type of bra and I have the item number. So all I do is have eBay auto-search for them and email me when a match is listed.

So go forth with your BOOB and do some eBoobay shopping!

Teaser Tuesday (6) - Highland Obsession

Highland Obsession by Dawn Halliday:

Earlier today she'd told him she didn't love him. But so much had happened since then. So much to burn away the cloak of fear shrouding her heart. Now the truth was exposed, and it was so sweet.

Q&A With Shiloh Walker

I am excited to be hosting my first guest blog/interview of Shiloh Walker. She is the author of many romance novels including paranormal and contemporary suspense. Her current release is Broken, which I previously had the opportunity to review. You can find my review here.

I would like to thank Shiloh for visiting with me and sharing her answers to my questions. She is always gracious and truly appreciates her readers.

1. Which of your books would you recommend new readers start with and why? It's going to depend on if they prefer contemporary romances or paranormal... if they prefer contemporary or romantic suspense, then, by all means, BROKEN, it's my latest release and although I didn't plan on writing that book, exactly, I think it turned out pretty well.  For the paranormal reader, maybe HUNTER'S NEED or THROUGH THE VEIL.

2. If you could swap places with one of the characters in your books, who would you choose and why?
*G* None of them...sorry.  I'm happy with my life, just as it is. I've got a great husband and great kids. Wouldn't want to swap that out, especially with MY characters-have you seen some of the crap I put them through?

3. If you were to switch two of your characters with one-another into each of their respective books, who would you choose and why?
I honestly don't know. I wouldn't swap the characters themselves around because they are with who they need to be with, although I might find it amusing to see how somebody like Eli (one of my Hunters) might deal with the world of the Veil series. Eli is something of a peacock. *G* I love him, but he's a peacock. I don't know if he could very well handle a world torn apart by war-might be amusing to watch. His heroine would probably be snickering at him.

4. Have you read any new author works you would recommend to readers? Hmmm. New? Julie James is fairly new, I think, and I love her contemporaries. Rob Thurman isn't exactly new, but I love and adore her urban fantasy. Ilona Andrews, not new, but love her. Jeaniene Frost, not new, but relatively new to me-love her.

5. Have you traveled for research?
Sometimes I'll travel if I'm doing a book in an area if I haven't been to-like THE MISSING was based in and around Gulf Shores, Alabama and we went down there so I could get a 'feel' for the area, so to speak. The same for HUNTER'S NEED-it was based in Alaska and I did go to Alaska, did some research there. It all kind of depends on the writer, though, I think.

6. Can you give a teaser for your current release or a line from an unpublished book?
Sure... this is Broken, a scene where they were walking around a mall, an informal date, of sort.

“Doesn’t mean you can’t make her heart go pitter-pat.”
Quinn stopped in his tracks.  Since she still had her arm hooked through his, she had to stop, too.  Tipping her head back, she smiled up at him, watching as his brows drew together, as the blush spread across his tanned face.
“Pitter-pat?” he echoed.
“Yeah…you know, gets a little uneven, does a little racing, makes the blood rush…pitter-pat.”
She was messing with him, Quinn realized.  It was written all over her expression—the gleam in her eyes, the wide grin on her face.  Hell. He thought his heart was about start doing some of that pitter-pat shit.  He wasn’t used to people teasing him—other than Luke, and maybe Jeb on occasion, it wasn’t something people did.  Not with him.
Reaching up, he caught Sara’s chin in her face.  Pressing his thumb against her lower lip, he said gruffly, “I’d be a lot more interested if it was your heart that was doing the pitter-pat thing.”  Then he replaced his thumb with his mouth, kissing her quick and light.
Pulling away after two seconds took a hell of a lot of control.  But he did it.  As they started walking down the mall corridor, Sara sighed.  He slid his hand down and caught hers.  She twined their fingers and then glanced up at him.  “Don’t worry, Quinn.  You make my heart do that pitter-pat thing quite a bit.”

7. What do the words "Intense Whisper" inspire you to envision?
Hmmm... makes me wonder what's being whispered. I'm nosy.

8. You are alone, in a dark alley and see a shadow. As the heroine what do you do?
I've spent quite a few years taking martial arts and one thing that's drilled into the head is self-awareness. Unless I had a reason for being in a dark alley, it's not likely I'd been in one. But if I am in one? I'm going to do what I normally do-remain aware of my surroundings... and without running, get out of the alley.

9. This question is for one of your characters. What do you think about Shiloh Walker?
She's a pain in the ass.

10. And reverse roles... ask me a question you have wanted to know about a reader!
Why in the world do you read this (meaning mine) stuff????

I love reading all kinds of stuff! Including your stuff Shiloh *G*. Reading allows me to imagine an alternative reality and escape from life. I love experiencing the adventures characters have and living in their shoes if only for a bit. I am amazed every day at the creativity and dedication authors put into their books. People who do not read stuff like you and other authors write are the ones I do not get.

11. Where can you be found online?
twitter... I'm addicted - http://twitter.com/shilohwalker
website - http://shilohwalker.com
blog - http://shilohwalker.wordpress.com

I would like to again thank Shiloh for visiting and encourage all of my visitors to check our her books. As this is my first time with the Q&A, please let me know if I missed anything or made a debacle of myself *G*.

Review: Three Days to Dead

Three Days to Dead
Kelly Meding

She's young, deadly, and hunted—with only three days to solve her own murder…

When Evangeline Stone wakes up naked and bruised on a cold slab at the morgue – in a stranger’s body, with no memory of who she is and how she got there – her troubles are only just beginning.  Before that night, she and the other two members of her Triad were star bounty hunters -- mercilessly cleansing the city of the murderous creatures living in the shadows, from vampires to shape-shifters to trolls. Then something terrible happened that not only cost all three of them their lives, but also convinced the city’s other Hunters that Evy was a traitor . . . and she can’t even remember what it was.

Now she’s a fugitive, piecing together her memory, trying to deal some serious justice – and discovering that she has only three days to solve her own murder before the reincarnation spell wears off. Because in three days, Evy will die again – but this time, there’s no second chance… Source: www.kellymeding.com

Three Days to Dead is an awesome book right from the first page. I found my self gripping the book with white knuckles. Much like an action packed block-buster this book is full of action, thrills, adventure and excitement. You get what you came for with this read. It is one of the most entertaining books I have read in some time. I am sure anyone witnessing me read this book would have seen some very comical looks on my face. Including blushes, gasps, widening eyes and rapid blinking! This book definitely threw me for a ride.

The heroine is brilliant with just the right mix of swagger, sex and spit-fire. Her spirit and emotion inflame the book. Kelly Meding did a wonderful job of bending realities and maintaining the main characters believability. The book is filled with creatures of all types, from both fairy tails and nightmares. I love the emotions the characters displayed or in some cases did not display. I feel that a strong emotional environment in a book, increases the readers awareness of each situation and depth of understanding. Three Days to Dead has a fantastic mix of emotional highs and lows. I kept wondering how there could possible be even the resemblance of a happy ending...

The majority of the book takes place in the slums of a city. I honestly cannot recall if it was named. I would have liked a bit more information on the location and I kept wondering if the monsters are isolated to the books local. I assume they are wide spread and that more elite units of bounty hunters exist elsewhere. The heroine also starts the book with nothing and I mean that quite literally. You do not get to read about her favorite shoes, pet or the way she leaves the bed unmade. I was struck with the stark reality of learning about Evy as she struggles to adapt to her new existence/rebirth.

I recommend this book to anyone who enjoys an all-star cast of characters in an action loaded package. This book defines what a page-turner should be.

Intense Whispers:
His shoulders drooped. Agony radiated off of him. He dropped my hand, and I mourned the loss of his touch. Only for a moment, though, because he spoke three words that shattered everything.
"I killed you."
~ page 39

"Now," Tully said, "let's try answering my questions. Who are you?"
Smug. I hated that. Self-preservation took a backseat to annoyance. "I'm the thing that the shadows fear."
