Review: Dead, Undead or Somewhere in Between
Dead, Undead or Somewhere in Between
By J.A. Saare No one knows better than Rhiannon Murphy that one bad corpse can ruin your whole day. She left behind the flash and sass of Miami for the no-nonsense groove of New York City, eager for a clean slate and a fresh start. A bartender by trade, a loud mouth by choice, and a necromancer by chance; she managed to keep her nifty talent hidden from those around her-until now. The deliciously good-looking vampire, Disco, knows her secret. When he strolls into her bar to solicit help investigating the mysterious disappearances of his kind from the city, Rhiannon discovers he's not the kind of person that appreciates the significance of the word no. But in a world where vampires peddle their blood as the latest and greatest drug of choice, it's only a matter of time before the next big thing hits the market. Someone or something is killing vampires to steal their hearts, and unlike Rhiannon, this isn't their first stroll around the undead block.

My reviews usually focus on characters, the author style and the settting of the story. With Dead, Undead or Somewhere in Between I could spend all day talking about Rhiannon. After a few pages I wanted to hurt her. Physically. It took some time but I eventually figured out what was driving my anger with the character. She was threatening my inner bitch. Perhaps you have too have encountered a person or character like this. Fictional or not, meeting them is like looking in a mirror. She is sarcastic, tough, jaded, independent and damaged. My heckles were raised from the start. I could take her! Or perhaps not. It was frighting to read lines written which sounded as though I said or thought them. Almost like J.A. Saare was reading my mind! Spooky. I am happy to say that I am cool with Rhiannon now. After I realized why she was bothering me, I loved reading her. *gives Rhiannon fist bump*
Rhiannon is really the main focus of this book. There is a hero and secondary characters, but hell if I can remember any of their names. Oh yes, Disco! He is everything a woman wants in a dapper, sophisticated, well aged vampire. His family is intriguing and I would love to have read more about each one of them. Particularly Paine. Few paranormal/urban fantasy books I have read involve close knit undead families and they fascinate me. My only complaint with the book is I did have some trouble following all of the characters. This may have been my fault. I often found myself thinking, "Now who the hell was/is that." There are a ton of minor characters and back stories. Perhaps this book should have been about 300 pages longer. *winks*
The first half of the book introduces Rhiannon and her attitude. The second half of the book is like a run away train. Action, suspense, romance, terror and snark. I was enthralled with the characters and their plight. And the end... the one so many have complained about. I was prepared to dislike it, throw the book out the window or cry. What a disappointment. I loved the ending! The conflict is resolved, the characters are content and instead of everything being wrapped in a neat little box... Ending that sentence would just spoil it for all of you.
Thank you J.A. Saare for thinking outside of the box, for being entertaining and writting so well most readers take it personally. I cannot wait to read The Renfield Syndrome. The possibilities are endless.

Private I with Michele Hauf and Contest!
Thank you for coming in. Were you informed of the reason you were brought in today? Nope, no one ever wants to talk to the author, it’s always the characters who get all the attention.
We believe your character may be involved in suspicious activity. When and where is the last time you saw your character? Naturally. Last time I saw Ashur (he likes the full title, but, please, it’s a tongue twister) he was romancing a pretty rich gal in New York City. He was also flipping around a fancy blade that looked like it could do some real damage.
For the record, can you please say and spell your characters full name and any known aliases. He’s Ashuriel the Black. He got the nickname Stealer of Souls because, well, he steals souls from dead Fallen angels. And Master of Dethnyht is because Dethnyht is what he named his dagger. Heh. Dude named his dagger. Ha! If you’re wondering what he is, he’s a Sinistari demon, forged specifically for the purpose of slaying fallen angels.
Do know where your character may be now? Like I said, New York, or maybe Italy. The chick he likes has a villa in the Italian countryside. Ashur likes nature, but he also likes having a private place to spend time with his girl, Eden.
Can you please give a brief description of your character? Too tall, shoulders broad enough to carry a woman on each side, midnight hair that dusts his ears. A cocky attitude that matches his sexy grin.
Do you have a recent picture of the subject? I do have a pic of him in mortal form, and one that pretty closely depicts his demonic form when he’s wearing armor of ineffable substance to fight the Fallen. It doesn’t show his horns, but I promise they are very stylish.
What was the demeanor of the subject like when you last met? Very out of the ordinary. He’d dropped his usual alert demeanor, always ready for approaching danger, and was actually smiling and laughing with Eden. As if, he enjoyed spending time with a mortal woman! Must be the Sinistari demon’s insistent desire for sin. He was merely lusting after her, surely. Couldn’t have been love. Maybe. Hmm..
Have they been fraternizing with anyone new as of late? Just Eden. The man has a one-woman mindset.
Do you know your character intimately? I know that Ashur fell to earth thousands of years ago, during biblical times. Now, I can’t really explain that part, because his most recent Summons to earth brought him up from Beneath, but know that he comes from divine origins. As a Sinistari, he’s been sent to slay Fallen intent on harming mortal muses (women who can bear the Fallen’s nephilim child) because if nephilim ever walks the earth, the apocalypse will come. One thing about the Sinistari though, they thrive on sin. They need to steal, gamble, lust, and do anything deemed wrong. It is how the demon survives. Love is their only sin. If Ashur were to fall in love, there’d be literal Hell to pay.
We found this with your characters prints on it. Can you please tell me what it is? Dethnyht. That’s a blade forged from divine substance that has fallen directly from Above. It is given to the Sinistari after the demon is forged, and together they can slay an angel. Have you heard that only an angel can slay an angel...? ;-)
Is there anything else you think may be helpful? I do know the guy likes his Mexican food. Tacos, specifically. So if you see him storming toward you, and want to distract him, maybe toss him a few tacos. Unless of course, you don’t mind a handsome warrior demon rushing toward you with lust in his eyes. :-)
If we our associates have any further questions, where can you be found? Heh. Certainly not out soaking up the sun. I’ll be inside all summer getting to know my latest Fallen hero, Samandiriel. So if you pass a really pale chick in the grocery store that is in desperate need of the sun... that would be moi. Website: http://www.michelehauf.com/

Cover Art Reveal
I will not gush about the beauty of this cover or the sheer design perfection it portrays *winks*. I cannot, as I designed it! That's right, Zoe Winters offered me the opportunity to design her cover for her upcoming printing of Blood Lust (three novellas).I have been a designer and photoshop artist for many years, but this was my first book cover. It was one of the most enjoyable projects I have ever worked on. Being able to take both my passions of reading urban fantasy/paranormal and design to create this cover was an indescribable joy.
Zoe is a blast to work with and I believe this will be an awesome read. Please visit Zoe's website. She also has a blog and is on Twitter. Tell her Intense sent you *g*!
Thank you Zoe for entrusting me with your cover and the daily banter. I look forward to the next design, but not nearly as much as getting my hands on a copy of the book! My followers will also get a chance to win a copy when it is released!

Drip, Drip, Drop
So I step into the shower today and turn on the water. I then proceeded to pour shampoo into my palm. See something missing here? I did not wet my medium length, blonde, thick and pron to tangle hair! So there I am rinsing with one hand while holding the other out like an offering to the shampoo god. If there is more then one shampoo god, would they be Sham and Poo? No wait, those two already have different jobs *g*.
Ever notice how difficult it is to get the conditioner back into the bottle, when you ACCIDENTALLY pour it first. No amount of delicate squeeze and suck action seems to be efficient. And to wipe it on the ledge for later... *shivers*.
One morning I ran from the shower to answer our business line. I was feeling generous that morning. Anyways, as I stood there dripping and acting very professional. The client begins complaining about how little we do for customers, that we don't take personal appointments... etc. Imagine how much I wanted a video phone right then!
A final thought on dripping. Herbal Essences, does it make you ohhhh and ahhhhh? I did once, but only because I got some in my eye. I assure you those were NOT gasps or curses of pleasure. Though even during more erotic moments something getting into an eye would be less then enjoyable. Just my opinion!
