Guest Post: Leonard D. Hilley II, Why I Write Dark Thrillers
Why I Write Dark Thrillers
Leonard D. Hilley II
Most people love great thrillers—whether in book form or via a great television series. What do the all of the following television series—24, Prison Break, True Blood, Vampire Diaries—have in common that made them successful hits? They build up tension by using cut scenes that leave you hanging between character interactions and at the end of each show. Once the show has you drawn in, you have no choice but to tune in the following week to see what happened next. I attempt to use the same mechanisms when I write.
When I had finished Predators of Darkness: Aftermath, I did not foresee a book series at all. I thought all that had occurred had tied up all the loose ends, but the characters proved me wrong a few months later. I could hear the interactions between them and new problems and enemies emerged. I had to let them bring the next novels to life.
I often explain to people that I write differently than most authors do. I actually see the scenes unfold in my mind as if I am watching a movie. The dialogue comes in a way that makes me feel like I’m in the room with the characters. Some of the best feedback I get from readers is that they could “visualize” the novels as they read. Using multiple POV and cut scenes helps increase the tension and suspense.
But for this to work effectively, readers must be able to relate or empathize with the characters (good or bad) to some extent. Placing characters into a dark dangerous world like Predators of Darkness: Aftermath means nothing if readers don’t connect to the players. My muse has a way of bringing them to life and often it’s hard for me to comprehend how these ideas and dilemmas filter down into my brain and onto the page.
Since I don’t use an outline when I write, what happens in the scenes is often as big a surprise to me as those who read the novels. I like the freshness of not knowing what is about to happen next and letting the characters struggle to figure out what they must do to survive. And it is my hope that my books are suspenseful enough that you find yourself turning page after page after page.
Here’s the premise:
“The desolate streets of downtown Pittsburgh in 2073 are a reminder of the missile attack that forever changed the lives of the surviving scientists and students hidden inside the fallout shelter of Helmsby's Genetic Research Center. Believing themselves to be the only survivors, they station inside the center until food supplies near depletion. Thinking the fallout has lessened, they emerge three years later to discover strange creatures patrolling the streets in search of human flesh and blood. The creatures possess the ability to shift their genomes and alter their appearances by realigning their genetic sequences. Daniel Hutchinson, their leader, teams with Lucas Ridale and together they set out to scavenge the area for food and supplies with the hope to find other survivors. But Daniel's most recent journey uncovers mysteries more frightening than the shifters. He discovers the tip of Pittsburgh has been fenced off from the rest of the area. Low-flying helicopters observe the streets, making him ponder the question: Were the shifters released as simply part of a military experiment with humans being their prey?”

I Died a Little
Yesterday the unimaginable happened and was due to pure stupidity on my part. My main hard drive died. Just stopped being recognized by my computer. I was frantic and in tears. Inside I died a little bit. Now the drive malfunction may not have been my fault, but not backing up for two months was indeed my fault. I have been working on computers forever and have never had one fail. Sure it happens to others, but not me. Nope. Until it did. This is where the stupid part comes in. I KNEW the drive was getting wonky. The computer had problems mounting *giggles* it all week. I just kept putting off backing up. Who has an hour to backup. I mean really *slaps head*.
So there I was crying and dieing a thousand little deaths for each hour that was lost of design. Including all my work for the Authors After Dark program. Which I had just finished the day before. The kids were terrified because I kept bursting into tears, my husband was furious that I had not backed up. He did tell me to at least twice that week. I was devastated.
So once the kids went to bed I started the rebuild process on a new drive and looking through all the emails I had, to see just what was lost since 3/19/11 (when I had last backed up). My husband diligently started trying everything he could to get the drive up, even for one moment. I knew what I wanted from it. We froze it, took apart another drive to see if it had the same circuit board (someone said it may be a circuit board problem online), put it into a network drive, our old G4 computer and lastly he tried putting it into his active Mac, an older G5...... BAM! There it was! All of my precious bits and bytes. I cried again and hastily moved files to his desktop and then onto another drive.
Today I am reorganizing my NEW drive with the data from the broken one. My husband thinks the actual drive was fine, but the circuit board to read it broke. At this point I do not care why, I just want all my designs back in the right places. I am also backing up as I write this and will be far more diligent in the future. There is no such thing as too many copies. Nope.
To end my little death I will share a video I found online for fixing dead, clicking hard drives during my desperate search for help. Please note that I thought it was legitimate and according to my husband I paled and turned green at the end of the minute. Now it is funny...

Guest Post: Amy Mah, Date Bag
Please welcome Amy Mah to Intense Whisper.
Hi! My name is Amy Mah Vampire and here are some helpful hints from my book: Fangs Rule: A Girls Guide to Being a Vampire
Going out on a date.
Yes we all go thought the same difficulties of what to wear, the wardrobe will not shut but I still do not have anything suitable, so after hours of searching in the end I decide to wear black as it will match my comfy shoes, ok so I have more shoes than a dictators wife but only one comfy pair and they are black, why comfy shoes? Well I have no idea where we are going so what the heck should I wear!
Now comes the date bag, why can’t a girl just go out, and when I say a girl I mean me, why do I have to look like I’m going for a 10 day vacation and not just a night out.
So lets open the date bag and check if everything is there.
1. Cell phone fully charged.
2. Spare cash and credit card.
3. Packet of mints for after eating smelly food….er…………foreigners
4. Chap stick ….well you may kiss him and …….. it goes with the mints ok?
5. Make up mirror, why take a mirror you ask, ..er …well if I get ship wreaked I can use it to signal for help, look it is just needed ok!
6. Packet of tissues just in case you can not find a washroom when out.
7. Keys large bunch and no I do not know why luggage keys are on the same ring with my house keys.
8. Sun glasses, hat and 100% sun block just in case you stay out early.
9. A spare pair of panties in case I sleep over ……… er not that I am planning to sleep over … er forget it ok! Look I said stop giggling and forget it!!!!
10. Precautions and protection, nowadays it is not just a boys reasonability for protection and so a girl should also take her own protection if needed, personally I take a can of Mace and a 10 inch kitchen knife and if that fails I sink my teeth into the neck!
The book: FANGS RULE a girls guide to being a vampire …. is a young Adult book for anyone between Puberty and Senility as it takes a close up look at life as a female teenage vampire in easy to follow A to Z advice for the reader.
Giving helpful advice such as how to explain to your Mom that as a teenage blood curdling denizen of the night you would like to paint your cave bedroom black without having a shouting match over why you don’t like the way she painted the stalagmites bright pink to go with the large stuffed pink bats hanging from the ceiling.
Everything is explained from how to polish your fangs to fashion tips and ways of climbing across a ceiling wearing a nightdress without showing your underwear.
Fangs Rule is a must for every teenage vampire and from these pages you will see why Amy says “Vampires Don’t Sparkle! …. They Bite!

Guest Post: Renee Ahdieh, Characters
Please give an exceptionally warm welcome to a new debut author, Renee Ahdieh!
When I read her blurb for Fanfare I just had to invite Renee to Intense Whisper.
Characters.
They’re the bread and butter of a good story. Sometimes, it doesn’t even matter what the tale is about, as long as it has “character.”
For me, the process of creating a character begins mostly with observation. I’ll see a scenario unfold before me and wonder what other outcomes are possible. Many times, it involves thinking of different things that could have been said or done in any given situation. We all have that friend or family member with the seemingly unfailing ability to say exactly the right thing at the right time. Alas, I’m often the one reminiscing hours later and thinking, “Doh! I should have said THAT!”
The wonderful thing about being a writer is that your characters ALWAYS say exactly what you meant for them to say. The poetic justice is quite nice, and I’m sure somewhere in every storyteller’s arsenal is a cheekily worded retribution for a childhood injustice. Hey, who says we bookworms don’t know how to party!
When I first began writing Fanfare, I knew I wanted my heroine to be Hispanic. I love reading novels written from the perspective of a strong female, but I often wish I could find more books with primary characters from diverse backgrounds, instead of only seeing the diversity in the supporting cast or a quirky sidekick (Short Round, anyone?).
When I determined that I wanted a Latina as my main character, I began observing the character traits of strong women with that background. Luckily, I happen to be a budding salsa enthusiast, so I had plenty of opportunities to conduct my research! My closest friend is from Puerto Rico, and she graciously “lent” me many of her most disarmingly awesome characteristics when I began writing from my main character Cris’ perspective.
I know that it isn’t always necessary for a character to be likeable, but my experience has taught me that one must always be able to “see” from a character’s perspective in order to absorb the full spectrum of the tale. Scarlett O’Hara is far from being a desirable candidate for BFF, but our ability to empathize with her struggle and grudgingly admire her mettle makes us keep turning the page. Sometimes, Cris does not do the right thing, and we as readers may not agree with her, but I think that strong character development is intrinsic to seeing the “why” of a tale.
Since I’m writing in a genre without the creative license of the paranormal or otherwordly, it is exceptionally important that I craft memorable characters. I’m definitely not knocking the paranormal genre, as I’m a HUGE fan of it, but it definitely helps your heroine win “cool” points when she can fly or read minds. Character-based writers are pressed to make you adore their protagonists not for their talents or abilities, but for their words and actions. This is why Elizabeth Bennet has been and always will be such a classic study in character development.
A truly memorable character is one that stays with you long after you’ve read the “Acknowledgements”. For me, it’s the character that challenges you to think outside of the box.
If you finish reading Fanfare and find yourself recalling a situation when Cris did or said something that made you smile, please let me know! It’s one of my most beloved compliments...
...and you may provide the inspiration for my next great character!
Fanfare by Renee Ahdieh
Expected publication: May 31st 2011 by Revolution Publishing
Cris Pereira hates starring in a cautionary tale. Alas, her recent heartbreak relegates her to this unbecoming fate. The only good thing about being dumped a foot from the altar is the newest layer to her punchy sarcasm. All she wants is a do-over, but this is not your average fairy tale, and wishes don't come true in the real world. One Sunday afternoon, she meets a movie star. Tom Abramson is intelligent, charming, and impetuous. In other words, he plays the role a bit too well. She isn’t falling for it. She knows better. All British men are not descendants of Fitzwilliam Darcy, and movie stars are genetic mutations gone awry: X-Men with statistical disadvantages and emotional handicaps. Keep your knight in shining armor. A modern girl can rescue herself, thank you very much. After all, dreams are for the foolhardy, nightmares are just a part of life, and... this is not your average fairy tale.
Fanfare is available for pre-order on Barnes and Noble's website, and is discounted if it is purchased before its release date. Click this link to pre-order!

We believe your character may be involved in suspicious activity. When and where is the last time you saw your character? Am I my character's keeper? I do believe he has a mind of his own, and a horse, I might add. And as the eldest son of Laird MacLean, he is free to come and go as he pleases.
For the record, can you please say and spell your characters full name and any known aliases. Calen MacLean, that's C-A-L-E-N M-A-C-L-E-A-N of the Clan MacLean.
Do know where your character may be now? He is a man, so I would imagine he's eating, sleeping, or fu--, well, you know men.
Can you please give a brief description of your character? Oh yes. He's tall, well over six feet, broad through the shoulders with bulging biceps due to the years of practicing with his sword. His abs are ripped and he has a butt you can bounce a gold piece on. His long blond hair is straight, and he has piercing blue eyes. But you may not notice anything else once he begins talking because it'll be difficult to think of anything besides nipping at his full bottom lip, or what those lips might feel like as he feathers kisses over your body. And then…um, excuse me, what was the question?
Do you have a recent picture of the subject? Yes, I do. Actually, he's agreed to grace the cover of my recent book, which just happens to be about him. Calen is the first book in the My Soul To Keep Trilogy.
What was the demeanor of the subject like when you last met? As of late he's been quite content and relaxed. He has gotten older and settled down some now, but he is still as handsome as ever, with a sharp mind and keen wit.
Have they been fraternizing with anyone new as of late? No, I doubt he would even want to. Ever since he laid eyes on Arianna, there's not been another for him. It was love at first sight for both of them.
Do you know your character intimately? I think so. Of course, I'd never say that in front of Arianna, she might turn me into a frog or something.
We found this with your characters prints on it. Can you please tell me what it is? It looks like a claymore to me. Calen is quite adept at weapons of war, as is his brothers, Caleb & Arion.
Is there anything else you think may be helpful? Yes, I do. The fact that Calen has settled into marriage, fatherhood, and will one day take his father's place as laird, he is no less active. He continues to hunt with the men, practice hand-to-hand combat and practices with his sword, he and Arianna can, more often than not, be found sneaking off to the loch for a little skinny-dipping.
If we, or our associates have any further questions, where can you be found? I don't really think that's any of your business, to be frank, but if you must... (exhales a bored sigh)... you can go to www.riemcgaha.com and click on the "contact" button.
Calen, My Soul to Keep 1 by Rie McGaha:
When Calen MacLeod begins having dreams of an ethereal beauty who beckons to him, he passes it off as just having an itch he hasn't scratched in a long time. But when he leaves on a journey to find her, following the directions she's given him in his dreams, he begins to doubt his sanity. And when he finds himself high in the Mackinaw Mountains in a secret fortress with unicorns and a pink and white castle, surrounded by women, each one more beautiful than the next, it's a fantasy no man would want to wake up from. But Arianna is the only woman for Calen.
The women of the Fortress have lived in peace, hidden away from the humans who tried to annihilate them all. But now a 500-year-old demon is out to destroy the women's matriarch, Ariella, and he'll stop at nothing to complete his mission. When Calen MacLeod shows up, he throws a wrench into Damon's plans. Never let it be said Damon isn't ready for anything, but when he kidnaps Arianna and takes her to modern day San Francisco, is he ready to meet Calen, who will stop at nothing to save his ladylove?

The shadow behind the desk shifts uncomfortably and kicks someone something under the desk. "Thank you for your cooperation."
As the author turns to leave, a pile of folders of the desk can be seen. Each stamped as containing confidential information for the Office of Fictional Unaccounted for Characters or O.F.U.C.
