Review: Changeling Moon

Changeling Moon
by Dani Harper

He roams the moonlit wilderness, his every sense and instinct on high alert. Changeling wolf Connor Macleod and his Pack have never feared anything — until the night human Zoey Tyler barely escapes a rogue werewolf’s vicious attack.

As the full moon approaches, Zoey has no idea of the changes that are coming, and only Connor can show her what she is, and help her master the wildness inside.   With her initiation into the Pack just days away and a terrifying predator on the loose, the tentative bonds of trust and tenderness are their only weapons against a force red in tooth, claw … and ultimate evil.

I love trying new authors and new books. I could not wait to read this book as it had been a while since I had read about shifters or weres. In Changeling Moon, Dani writes a refreshing tale of romance, paranormal creatures, magic and the human condition. The story is easy to follow and quick to read without excess filler. Delivering just the right blend of setting and dialogue. I could immediately tell that the author put a lot of thought in not only the story and characters but in the writing as well. I really appreciated that I could read the book casually and not loose my place due to the distractions of life.

What drew me into the story was the heroine, Zoey, and her simple charisma. She is not the standard kick-ass heroine found in many paranormals, but just an average career woman trying to make a new start and escape trials of her past by making a new start in a new town. She is a hard working and down to earth. Zoey is independent and strong but also knows when to let go. The hero, Connor, is a changeling wolf who works hard and has a huge heart. In fact many of the secondary characters are caring, devoted and loyal. The pack, community and Connor have a fantastic family bond that plays throughout the book.

The romance is easy between Zoey and Conner without the usual denial and angst of who will break first. Both characters just go with it and recognize each other as mates early in the book, long before it is confirmed by the pack leader. It was so refreshing to fall in love with the characters and not find myself holding my breathe for the moment. The book is the "moment".

Though the book is largely about the two characters finding each other it also has some very dark moments and brutally stark realities. Life is not always pretty and Dani writes a villain in Changeling Moon that is most definitely NOT pretty. Not forgiving, gentle, or sane. I was so comfortable with reading that when the villain starts to show he true agenda I was absolutely shocked. Almost as shocked as the main characters are. I was torn between crying for the victims of the story and cheering for the good wolves guys.

Changeling Moon had a great ending filled with action, suspense and magic. Everything comes full circle and all of the questions are answered. I could not stop turning the pages as the story flowed and unfolded page by page. This book was a thrill to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good writing, weres, fast thinking characters, meddlesome families, intense villains and easy romance. I look forward to reading the second book in Dani's series, Changeling Dream which releases today!

Review: The Demonica Series

The Demonica Series

Pleasure Unbound | Desire Unchained | Passion Unleashed | Ecstasy Unveiled | Sin Undone
By Larissa Ione

The demon is a prince of the air and can transform himself into several shapes, delude our senses for a time; but his power is determined, he may terrify us but not hurt.
– Robert Burton, Anatomy of Melancholy

Available from Grand Central Publishing, a sexy, dark paranormal series set in an underworld hospital.

Humans go to hospitals. Animals go to veterinarians. But where do injured, ill, and decapitated demons go? It isn't as if every supernatural being possesses the ability to grow a new limb to replace one that's been hacked off by a demon slayer scumbag. Fear not, fellow vamps, werewolves, and demons, for help has arrived. Three brothers, incubus demons by birth, human in appearance (mostly), have pulled together to make the most of the healing skills common to their species. Welcome to Underworld General Hospital, where sexy demons are doctors, HMOs are non-existent, and the blood bank sometimes doubles as the cafeteria. And you don't even want to know what goes on in the supply closets… from Larissa's blog

Love hurts. But it is always worth it. No series I have read expresses this concept more clearly, painfully and eloquently then Larissa Ione's Demonica Series. From the first book, Pleasure Unbound, to the last, Sin Undone, I was astounded by the levels of kinship, trust, loyalty and faith the characters displayed. The five books are filled with truly unselfish acts, incredible heroism and harsh romance.

Pleasure Unbound is a stark and fascinating introduction to Larissa's expansive demon world. Set everything you know about demons, ghouls, vampire, and weres aside because nothing in these books is as it seems. There is no right and wrong, good and evil, or simple definitions of society. This demon world is rough, unforgiving and brutal. As are the characters who reside in it.

Of the characters; I loved Wraith the best. In Pleasure Unleashed he is spectacular, but throughout the series I was always drawn to his actions and snarky demeanor. Who would not love a vampire demon!? Larissa's heroes are dashing, devoted and have a wide range of humors. However, they are also tortured, abused and as jaded as any hero I have read. But I would not change a thing.

The heroines brought the heroes to their knees, often literally. The heroines are quick witted, intelligent and sarcastic. They do not make anything easy for the heroes. Fierce independent women abound. As assassins, hunters and guardians they know how to fight and fight well. Of the heroines, Tayla from Pleasure Unbound was my favorite. She is unforgettable in Pleasure Unbound
and spectacular throughout the series. As a demon slayer, thrust into the arms of her sworn enemy she is as undone as Sin is in the fifth book of the series. And red leather is just awesome.

Adding to the depth of the series is the true evil revealed in Desire Unchained. Unrelenting, unequivocal and determined evil. Desire Unchained is shockingly brutal at times. And not just in nightmares. The villains in the Demonica Series play for keeps. But then so do the main characters. Love offsets the dark scenes in the books beautifully. With honest and feverish passion. The Demonica Series revolves around these bonds of love and hate.

Taking place in today's world, demon realms and the almost parallel universe of the demon hospital, Underground General, the settings are vivid and expansive. Walk the halls of UG, treasure hunt in Passion Unleashed or explore hell with Sin. Visit angels and the grim reaper, tropical forests and secluded but charmed cabins. I loved traveling with the characters in this series. Scene change was also onveniently quick with portal gates and holographic maps. Ingenious. *g*

Larissa does a great job of keeping the world, characters and stories consistent. All of the books flow well together and are always well concluded, while maintaining possibilities and unanswered questions for the next books. After the first book I was dying to find out more about Wraith. After Ecstasy Unveiled I could not wait to read more about Sin. Of the books Pleasure Unbound was my favorite followed by Sin Undone. Funny that they are the first and last books written to date. Essentially I loved learning the world and characters at the start and having it wrapped in a lovely, bloody bow at the end.

Wait... were there hints in Sin Undone about her next series, Lords of Deliverance?
Looks like I have more reading to do!

Have you hugged your demon today!?
