by Dani Harper
He roams the moonlit wilderness, his every sense and instinct on high alert. Changeling wolf Connor Macleod and his Pack have never feared anything — until the night human Zoey Tyler barely escapes a rogue werewolf’s vicious attack.
As the full moon approaches, Zoey has no idea of the changes that are coming, and only Connor can show her what she is, and help her master the wildness inside. With her initiation into the Pack just days away and a terrifying predator on the loose, the tentative bonds of trust and tenderness are their only weapons against a force red in tooth, claw … and ultimate evil. I love trying new authors and new books. I could not wait to read this book as it had been a while since I had read about shifters or weres. In Changeling Moon, Dani writes a refreshing tale of romance, paranormal creatures, magic and the human condition. The story is easy to follow and quick to read without excess filler. Delivering just the right blend of setting and dialogue. I could immediately tell that the author put a lot of thought in not only the story and characters but in the writing as well. I really appreciated that I could read the book casually and not loose my place due to the distractions of life.
What drew me into the story was the heroine, Zoey, and her simple charisma. She is not the standard kick-ass heroine found in many paranormals, but just an average career woman trying to make a new start and escape trials of her past by making a new start in a new town. She is a hard working and down to earth. Zoey is independent and strong but also knows when to let go. The hero, Connor, is a changeling wolf who works hard and has a huge heart. In fact many of the secondary characters are caring, devoted and loyal. The pack, community and Connor have a fantastic family bond that plays throughout the book.
The romance is easy between Zoey and Conner without the usual denial and angst of who will break first. Both characters just go with it and recognize each other as mates early in the book, long before it is confirmed by the pack leader. It was so refreshing to fall in love with the characters and not find myself holding my breathe for the moment. The book is the "moment".
Though the book is largely about the two characters finding each other it also has some very dark moments and brutally stark realities. Life is not always pretty and Dani writes a villain in Changeling Moon that is most definitely NOT pretty. Not forgiving, gentle, or sane. I was so comfortable with reading that when the villain starts to show he true agenda I was absolutely shocked. Almost as shocked as the main characters are. I was torn between crying for the victims of the story and cheering for the good
Changeling Moon had a great ending filled with action, suspense and magic. Everything comes full circle and all of the questions are answered. I could not stop turning the pages as the story flowed and unfolded page by page. This book was a thrill to read. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys good writing, weres, fast thinking characters, meddlesome families, intense villains and easy romance. I look forward to reading the second book in Dani's series, Changeling Dream which releases today!
