Vampires, and werewolves, and demons, oh my.
Rhiannon thought facing off against a deranged child vampire was the most dangerous task she would ever have to undertake, but she’s about to discover making a deal with a demon is far, far worse. Sent forward into another reality, one in which vampires are now dominating nearly extinct humans, she realizes the sooner she returns to her vampire lover, Disco, the better.
Unfortunately, time changes a lot of things; including those most trusted around her. When she’s faced with a loss and betrayal unlike any she has ever known, her focus shifts from severing the debt between the demon that wants to kill her, to exacting a revenge that will bring forth consequences she never could have fathomed. Review: The Hunter ARC
The Hunter - Book One of the Legend Chronicles
Theresa Meyers
A Devil Of A Job
Colt Jackson has gotten his name on many a wanted poster with success in the family business: hunting supernaturals across the frontier. Lately, though, there's a sulfur stink in the wind and the Darkin population is exploding. A rift in the worlds is appearing. To close it, Colt will have to do the unthinkable and work with a demon to pass arcane boundaries no human alone can cross.
Except when he summons his demon, he doesn't get some horned monstrosity: he gets a curvy redheaded succubus named Lilly, who's willing to make a bargain to become human again. He also gets Lilly's secret expertise on the machinations on the dark side of the rift. And her charm and cleverness help to get them out of what his silver-loaded pistol and mechanical horse can't. Of course, when all hell breaks loose, he might have to sacrifice his soul. But what's adventure without a little risk?
From www.theresameyers.com
The Hunter by Theresa Meyers is an interesting adventure to say the least. Part treasure hunting, part paranormal, part steampunk and part romance. The book is a bundle of contradictions. From blushing Succubus to Hunters with fears. Even heroes with faults! I never knew where the characters quest would take me and often caught myself peeking ahead to see.
The hero is a rough and tumbled cowboy who happens to hunt demons, vampires and shape shifters with his brothers (both of which, I assume, will be the heroes in the following books). Theresa does a fantastic job describing both Colt's outward appearance and his heart. Colt materializes from the pages and I could almost smell the dust from the brim of his Stetson. Colt is everything a cowboy hero should be and made only better with techno weapons and spy gadgets. After all, what woman can resist a fire whip!?
The heroine, Lilly, is a mystery to me. She is a demon who does not wish to be one. A professional temptress who is bashful and an absolute lady. She is most comfortable in gowns, bustles and lace but can materialize the most scandalous lingerie. She is vulnerable and kick-ass. I just cannot place her character. Even as I write this I am amused by Lilly. If ever a character had me befuddled it is Miss Lilly. She is most definitely never boring.
The setting is very old west with cacti and sand. Ghost towns, salons and off the beaten path general stores. Colt and Lilly traverse through mines and dunes by mechanical horse, dirigible, coach and train. Escape the creatures of nightmares and negotiate complicated traps. Yes, the Indiana Jones theme song is now stuck in my head!
Slow, tortured romance sweeten the deal in The Hunter. If you love a good adventure with hints of passion, The Hunter is for you. With sweeping settings and mechanical whims Theresa included a bit of something for all romance readers. I look forward to continuing the adventure in The Slayer which release April of 2012.
Recieved for an honest review at Authors After Dark 2011.

Private I Interview/Giveaway: Laura Bickle, Sparky
Private I with Laura Bickle
Thank you for coming in. Were you informed of the reason you were brought in today? I was told that my fire salamander is loose. Again. He really isn't amenable to the idea of a leash...but...are there salamander leash laws? Is he supposed to have rabies shots? Am I getting a ticket for this?
I think I'm screwed.
We believe your character may be involved in suspicious activity. When and where is the last time you saw your character? Um. Well...there was an incident in which he roasted some stuffed animals at a baby superstore. The fire department showed up. But the last time I saw him was in the Detroit Crime Lab. He was playing with a Bunsen burner and set off the sprinkler system.
This is gonna be expensive, right? What did he do now? Did he blow up a car?
For the record, can you please say and spell your characters full name and any known aliases. Sparky... S-P-A-R-K-Y. He doesn't have a last name. I'm pretty sure that he's had other aliases in the past. Rumor is that he hung out with Van Helsing. And that he was responsible for that Hindenburg disaster.
Do know where your character may be now? I suspect that he's hanging out with fire investigator Anya Kalinczyk in Detroit. She moonlights as a ghost hunter, and Sparky likes to eat ghosts. Last I heard, they were investigating some cases of spontaneous human combustion.
Can you please give a brief description of your character? He's a five-foot long speckled hellbender salamander. He glows with a mottled amber light. He's usually not too far from his favorite toy, a Glow-Worm.
Do you have a recent picture of the subject? Sure. This is one I took before he ate the camera.
What was the demeanor of the subject like when you last met? He was kind of cranky. I heard that he has a nest of newts in Anya's bathtub, so he's probably sleep-deprived and feeling protective of the baby salamanders.
Has he been fraternizing with anyone new as of late? He's been hanging out at the morgue with this guy who says he's a psychopomp. He supposedly ferries the dead to the Underworld. His name's Charon, but he looks like some dude stuck in the 1980s.
We understand that you are the author of the character, but can you describe your personal relationship with them? He has been, variously, my muse and chief irritant.
Do you know your character intimately *snickers*? Not that intimately. He's a salamander, for chrissakes. He sleeps at the foot of the bed. With his Glow-Worm.
We found this with your characters prints on it. Can you please tell me what it is? This is a torque - a necklace shaped like a salamander. It's copper, and it's the magical vessel that Sparky is tied to. It's always around Anya's neck. It's bad news if you have the necklace and Anya and Sparky aren't here...
Is there anything else you think may be helpful? Sparky likes chasing cats and dogs. You might find him at a park. He also has an insatiable appetite for electronic devices - microwaves, cell phones, that sort of thing.
If we, or our associates have any further questions, where can you be found? I can be found at my desk. Often with a cat or salamander curled up in my lap.
SPARKS by Laura Bickle
Available September 2010
Anya Kalinczyk is the rarest type of psychic medium, a Lantern, who holds down a day job as an arson investigator with the Detroit Fire Department—while working 24/7 to exterminate malicious spirits haunting a city plagued by unemployment and despair. Along with her inseparable salamander familiar, Sparky, Anya has seen, and even survived, all manner of fiery hell—but her newest case sparks suspicions of a bizarre phenomenon that no one but her eccentric team of ghost hunters might believe: spontaneous human combustion.
After fire consumes the home of elderly Jasper Bernard, Anya is stunned to discover his remains—or, more precisely, a lack of them; even the fiercest fires leave some trace of their victims—and she is sure this was no naturally occurring blaze. Soon she’s unearthed a connection to a celebrity psychic who preys on Detroit’s poor, promising miracles for money. But Hope Solomon wants more—she’s collecting spirits, and in a frantic race against time, Anya will face down an evil adversary who threatens her fragile relationship with her lover, her beloved Sparky’s freshly hatched newts, and the wandering souls of the entire city.
We are offering a reward for any information leading to the apprehension of this character. Leave a comment for Laura to win a print copy of SPARKS!
Contest ends October 22nd, 2011. Please leave your email address (name AT domain DOT com). One entry per household. International entries are welcome.

As the author approaches the door to the interview room a muffled scream can be heard and a shuffling of several feet. Upon cautiously opening the door the only sign of previous movement is the settling of small dust partials shimming in the filtered sunlight.

Review: Nocturne
Nocturne
by Syrie James
When Nicole Whitcomb's car runs off a Colorado mountain road during a blinding snowstorm, she is saved from death by a handsome, fascinating, and enigmatic stranger.
Snowbound with him for days in his beautiful home high in the Rockies, she finds herself powerfully attracted to him. But there are things about him that mystify her, filling her with apprehension. Who is Michael Tyler? Why does he live in such a secluded spot and guard his private life so carefully? What secret—or secrets—is he hiding?
Nicole has secrets of her own and a past she is running from—but Michael understands her better than anyone she has ever known. Soon, she is falling as deeply in love with him as he is with her— a profoundly meaningful experience that is destined to change their lives forever.
As the sexual tension between them builds, however, the clues mount up. When Nicole learns her host's terrifying secret, there is nowhere for her to run but into the blizzard raging outside, and Michael may be the only one who can save her life.
Filled with unexpected twists and surprises, Nocturne is a page-turning, haunting, and deeply romantic story of forbidden love that will grab your heart and not let go. From http://www.syriejames.com
Nocturne is a fantastically quick read but just the right length at the same time. Filled with dialogue the pages fly by as Syrie's world unfolds. I was quickly captivated by the story and the easy flow of text.
Set in modern day the story's backdrop is easy to imagine while occasionally adding an unexpected twist through the next closed door. Syrie meticulously details the environment adding depth and realism to the novel. I love the descriptions which evoked all of the human senses. A beautiful landscape which the painful to look at, the loud crack of ice, the feel of blistering cold snow flakes and the smell of fresh wood chips are just a few.
The heroine, Nicole, is exceedingly easy to relate with which makes the book all the more engaging. I found myself upset with her, agreeing with her, astonished by her and utterly in love with her stubborn spirit. The hero, Michael, is debonair, standoffish and handsome. He fills the room with this presence while also utterly frustrating the heroine. He is a mystery that Nicole is determined to solve. I love the unique way their relationship unfolds and the rapid pace of their romance.
Nocturne is an heart wrenching and romantic paranormal novel. A book of seclusion, guilt, sacrifice and redemption. A book about two people who spend the briefest time together but find a lifetime of love and memories. The characters are mesmerizing and the setting is magical. Sometimes it is the simplest elements that make a story real to a reader. To me Nocturne was a very real tale about two extraordinary individuals, true love and life.
I too believe that true love always finds a way...

Review: Cold Magic
Cold Magic
by Kate Elliott
Young Cat Barahal thinks she understands the world she lives in and her place in it. She lives with her aunt and uncle and cousins, and is best of friends with her beloved cousin Beatrice (Bee). The two young women attend the local academy in the city of Adurnam.
Unexpectedly drawn into a labyrinth of politics involving blood, betrayal, and old feuds, she’s about to find out that most of what she thinks she knows is very, very wrong.
And she’s going to have to make a run for her life if she wants to discover the truth, not just about her own family but about an ancient secret lying at the heart of her world. From http://www.kateelliott.com
When I saw a tweet from an author offering her extra copies of a new series, I went and took a look at the blurb and said, "Sure I would love one". The book arrived and went on my pile to read and review. So imagine my shock when I grab it as my next-to-read and actually read the authors name, lol. KATE ELLIOTT!? No. It cannot be from the Kate Elliott, I thought. One of my favorite series is the Crown of Stars series and I loved Jaran. I trembled and opened the cover. IT WAS SIGNED. *dies happy* Now as I write this I realize I even have an email from her in response to my wish for a copy. Wow, I am still glowing. So without further ado (a.k.a SQUEE'ING) here is my honest review of Cold Magic.
Cold Magic is book one of the The Spiritwalker Trilogy. Obviously, I had no preconceived notions about what I was about to read. Absentminded as I began. Thus started my journey with the heroine, Cat. Through Cat's average day as a college girl I was introduce to her family, her life and her culture. But this is no simple tale and certainly no simple girl.
The character development was astounding. From impoverished workers to arrogant mages to amusing long lost relatives, no one was insignificant. Every small detail is critical to understanding the dynamics of the society in Cold Magic. Very quickly I found that this book was going to take a bit more concentration to appreciate all of the intricate details. These small and sometimes seemingly unimportant nuances are what made the book so remarkable. I relished in all of the quips and turns of the characters.
The characters are strong willed, independent, resourceful and often times lovingly stubborn. Cat and her cousin begin the story very sure of themselves and their place in the world. Each character has a function, a place and importance to the story. The adventure turns Cat's world around and takes from her everything she knew about her world while introducing new characters along the way. I loved seeing the strength and loyalty of Cat. Learning about her character almost as she herself discovered who and what she was.
The setting is described in rich detail. From countryside to city blocks the world comes alive from the pages. Much as any epic fantasy should (which is how I would label this book) the setting of the story is as important as the characters living in it. I cannot imagine the painstaking effort that goes into creating worlds from scratch. From dress, food, religion and transportation Cold Magic was written with incredible vision. I can still clearly imagine the academy, airship and mills. Extraordinary.
Cold Magic is a fantasy adventure with a touch of steampunk, science fiction and romance. The pages resonate Kate's passion for the characters and their honorable quests. Self sacrifice, hard truths and ambition drive the book. Cold Magic reminded me how true heroes and heroines come to be, without loosing their spirit or love of life. I cannot wait to adventure again with Cat in the next book, Cold Fire.
